Did Mahadev really build a golden Lanka?
According to popular belief, once Goddess Parvati saw the fame and glory of Goddess Lakshmi, she also requested Mahadev to build a beautiful palace. At first Mahadev did not pay attention to this but when Goddess Parvati became adamant on this, Lord Shiva asked his devotee Ravana to build a beautiful palace of gold. Finding a suitable place, Ravana built a golden palace there, but while doing so, he himself became greedy. When Lord Shiva, pleased with Ravana’s work, asked him to ask for a boon, Ravana asked for the same golden palace as a gift from Mahadev. Mahadev happily donated the golden palace to Ravana.

Who built the golden Lanka?
According to Valmiki Ramayana, in ancient times there was a demon named Sukesh. He had three sons, Mali, Sumali and Malyavan. On the request of these three, Vishwakarma, the architect of the gods, built Lanka made of gold. Demons ruled here. Later, out of fear of Lord Vishnu, the demons left this place and went somewhere else. Later, he pleased Lord Brahma by doing penance for Kuber, son of sage Vishrava and elder brother of Ravana. It was Brahmadev who had handed over the kingdom of Lanka to Kuber.
How did Ravana get the golden Lanka?
Ravana’s maternal grandfather Malyavan planned to gather the demons and capture golden Lanka again. Under this plan, Ravana along with his soldiers attacked his elder brother Kuber. Frightened by Ravana’s might, Kuberdev had to leave Lanka. In this way the kingdom of demons was once again established over Lanka. That means Golden Lanka has no connection with the story of Mahadev. This is just a belief that has been going on for years.
