Madras University offers free UG courses: How to apply, documents required, last date details

Chennai: Applications are now open for the Free Education Scheme at the University of Madras in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Under this scheme, students can enroll in undergraduate programs at government-aided colleges and private self-financing colleges. Those wishing to pursue an undergraduate degree free of cost are advised to submit their applications by May 23.

Colleges under University of Madras

A total of 121 colleges function under the jurisdiction of the University of Madras, including 18 government colleges, 24 government-aided colleges, 89 self-financing colleges, and 53 colleges dedicated to research studies. Prominent institutions in Chennai under this umbrella include Loyola College, Ethiraj College for Women, Stella Maris College, Women’s Christian College, and Meenakshi College for Women.

Eligibility criteria

To enroll in an undergraduate program under the Free Education Scheme, students must have successfully passed the Class 12 public examinations in all subjects. Applicants are required to submit their Class 11 and Class 12 mark sheets at the time of application. The annual income of the student’s family must not exceed ₹3 lakhs, verified through an Income Certificate issued by the Tahsildar.

Priority will be accorded to economically disadvantaged and destitute individuals, students who have lost their parents, first-generation learners from families with disabilities, and transgender individuals. Admissions within each of these specific categories will be conducted based on a ratio of 1:2.

Required documents

Applicants must submit their Class 11 and 12 mark sheets, an income certificate valid for one year, a “First Graduate” certificate, a disability certificate if applicable, and death certificates for those who have lost their parents. If an applicant does not possess the income certificate or the “First Graduate” certificate at the time of application, they may upload an acknowledgment slip obtained from the Tahsildar instead. Original certificates may be submitted during the counselling session.

Application process

Students wishing to enroll must apply online through the official website, unom.ac.in. Applicants are required to accurately fill in the details requested in the application form and submit the necessary documents. Applications must be uploaded within 15 days from the date of the release of the Class 12 examination results, by May 23. The University of Madras has stated that only applications accompanied by all valid certificates will be accepted.
