The Sports Ministry has directed all national sports federations to announce the selection process for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics in advance. This policy will have to be made public two years before the Games, to ensure transparency and accountability in the selection process.
The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has directed all recognized National Sports Federations (NSFs) to publish the selection process, criteria and pathways to be followed for the selection of athletes for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
According to a press release from the Union Sports Ministry, the Ministry has reiterated that the selection policy and criteria for major sporting events such as the Olympics, Paralympics, Asian Games, Para Asian Games and Commonwealth Games should be well publicized and uploaded on the official website of the respective NSF at least two years before the commencement of the respective Games. The selection policy and criteria should also be shared with the member units of NSF and Sports Authority of India (SAI).
Deadline fixed for selection process
The Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games are scheduled to be held from July 14 to July 30, 2028. The Ministry has informed that the qualification pathways for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games have been released by the respective International Federations, which are available at the following link: https://www.olympics.com/ioc/documents/olympic-games/los-angeles-2028-olympic-games.
Accordingly, all recognized NSFs have been requested to immediately publish on their official websites the Olympic qualification and selection pathway, criteria and process to be followed for the selection of athletes for the Games and this work should be completed by July 15, 2026. NSFs have also been asked to circulate the selection route among all the affiliated State and Union Territory Associations.
Emphasis on transparency and accountability
The initiative aims to promote greater transparency and accountability in the athlete selection process. It will be ensured that the qualification pathway, selection criteria and selection process for the Games are placed in the public domain well in advance for the benefit of all stakeholders.
