Sunil Gavaskar is celebrating his 77th birthday today (10th July). He is the first batsman in the world to score 10,000 runs in Test cricket. Sunil Gavaskar’s parents
Sunil Gavaskar was born on 10 July 1949 in a middle class family of Mumbai. His father’s name was Manohar Gavaskar, who himself was a good club level cricketer in Mumbai. His mother Meenal Gavaskar was a housewife. Sunil Gavaskar’s father played a big role in turning him towards cricket in his childhood and developing the basic understanding of this game in him.
Gavaskar’s maternal uncle Madhav Mantri
The path to international cricket in Sunil Gavaskar’s family was opened through his maternal uncle. His maternal uncle Madhav Mantri was a former Indian Test wicketkeeper and batsman. Madhav Mantri had played 4 test matches for India. In his childhood, when Sunny used to go to his maternal uncle’s house, seeing India’s test cap and jersey there, he too had the desire to play for the country. Later he was also the President of Mumbai Cricket Association.
Sister Kavita and brother in law Gundappa Vishwanath
Kavita Vishwanath and Nutan Gavaskar are two younger sisters of Sunil Gavaskar. Kavita is married to another great batsman of Indian cricket, Gundappa Vishwanath. Sunil Gavaskar and Gundappa Vishwanath were the two strongest backbones of Indian batting in the 1970s. In this way, India’s two greatest batsmen are brothers-in-law. On the other hand, Nutan has worked as the General Secretary of the Women’s Cricket Association of India (WCAI).
Wife Marshall Gavaskar
Sunil Gavaskar married Marshall Mehrotra in the year 1974. Marchanel belongs to a well-known business family of Kanpur. Throughout Gavaskar’s career, he stayed away from the limelight and handled the entire family very well. While watching a cricket match in 1973, Marshall went to collect Sunil Gavaskar’s autograph. It is said that after getting the autograph, Sunil also fell in love with her and they got married the very next year.
son Rohan Gavaskar
Sunil and Marshnel have a son named Rohan Gavaskar. Like his father, Rohan also chose cricket as his career. Rohan Gavaskar represented Bengal in domestic cricket and made a place in the Indian team on the basis of his excellent performance. He played 11 One Day International matches for India during 2004–2005. At present, Rohan is a successful cricket commentator. Rohan is married to Davinia D’Souza.
