What are the big warnings given by Lalit Modi regarding the future of Test cricket? What is Lalit Modi’s opinion regarding bilateral series and ODI cricket? What suggestion did Modi give on franchise based model to popularize Test cricket?
London: Former Indian Premier League (IPL) chairman Lalit Modi has warned that traditional bilateral series in cricket will soon end. He said that if major commercial changes were not made to attract a global audience, the existence of Test cricket would be in danger. 62-year-old Modi was speaking to ANI in London. He stressed that it is very important to adopt a franchise based model to save the heritage of Test cricket.
Lalit Modi said, “Test series will not last long.” In view of the decreasing number of spectators in the stadium, four-day day-night matches should be conducted instead of five-day Tests. Also, to maintain the excitement of the game and the pride of the countries, a strict International World Championship format should be implemented every year.
Modi demanded the complete abolition of ODI matches to simplify the cricket calendar. He said, “ODI matches should end, but Test cricket should remain alive. Test is the most important part of cricket.
Giving a revolutionary suggestion, he said that to attract the young generation and new fans towards Test cricket, IPL franchises should be allowed to form their own Test teams. His proposal is that while matches between countries should remain important, at least one exhibition Test match should also be organized in a season between franchises at the club level. This reaction of Lalit Modi has come at a time when there is huge pressure on the international cricket calendar due to franchise league and ICC tournaments. This year, due to the IPL 2024 season and the ICC T20 World Cup, there was a long gap of 124 days in Test cricket.
