Ladakh’s Magnetic Hill is famous for the strange sight of vehicles appearing to roll uphill on their own. Discover the science and optical illusion behind this fascinating road in India.
Mountain roads usually mean steep climbs, bad patches, and heavy engine load. But what if you go to a specific spot, turn off your car engine completely, and the car still moves up the hilly road on its own? Yes, you heard that right! You just need a car and your hands on the steering wheel. You do not need to burn any fuel or press the accelerator at all.
This might sound like a sci-fi movie or a ghost story, but this unbelievable place is right here in India. Where is this magical road? People call this thrilling spot Magnetic Hill. You will find it on the Leh-Kargil Highway, just 30 kilometres away from Leh city, on the way to Ladakh from Jammu and Kashmir. It sits at a massive height of about 14,000 feet above sea level. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has even put up a big signboard there. It clearly says, “Magnetic Hill: The Phenomenon That Defies Gravity.” You will also see a white box painted on the road right in front of the signboard for guidance.
What exactly happens there?
You just park your vehicle inside that white box and turn off the engine or put the gear in neutral. Then the magic starts. You will see your car slowly climbing up the steep road ahead, without any engine power! The surprise does not end here. Within a few seconds, the car speed can reach up to 10 to 20 kilometres per hour. You will experience the exact same thing even if you take a bike or a scooter. What is the real reason behind this? Locals share many myths, but scientists point out two main reasons. The first theory claims that this mountain has a very strange and powerful magnetic field. This field pulls any metallic object towards it with huge force.
People even say that airplanes flying over this mountain increase their altitude to avoid this strong magnetic pull. However, another group of scientists believes that this whole thing is just a perfect optical illusion. The geographical layout of this Magnetic Hill and its surrounding valley is very tricky. The road actually goes slightly downwards. But because of the surrounding hills, it looks like the road is going upwards from a distance. So, when a car naturally rolls down due to gravity, our eyes trick us into believing that the car is magically climbing up the hill without an engine! Whatever the real reason is, watching a car speed up a mountain with its engine off is a totally thrilling experience.
