A similar mysterious and unique Shiva temple is also in Chhattisgarh. This temple is located in Khapri village of Durg district of the state. The biggest feature of this temple is that here devotees worship a dog along with Lord Shiva.
This is the reason why people call this temple Kukurdev Temple. Usually there are statues of Gods in temples, but a statue of a dog has been installed in the sanctum sanctorum of this temple. An ancient Shivalinga is also installed right next to this statue. According to the local people, the history of this temple and its beliefs are centuries old. Let us know the story of this unique temple.
Story of construction of the temple
A very emotional story is told behind the construction of this temple. It was created in memory of a faithful animal. According to old folk tales, centuries ago a Banjara came to live in this village with his family and a pet dog. Banjara loved his dog very much. The dog was also very loyal. After some time the entire area was hit by a severe famine.
The nomad started yearning for every grain. Then out of compulsion he took some money from a big moneylender of the village. Time passed by. Banjara could not pay the moneylender. The moneylender was demanding his money back. When the nomad could not find any way out, he mortgaged his most beloved and loyal dog to the moneylender. The dog started living at the moneylender’s house.
The moneylender got all the money back
One night there was a theft at the moneylender’s house. The thieves hid the stolen money and all the valuables under the ground near the village. Here, when the moneylender woke up in the morning, he became very worried. Then the dog caught hold of the moneylender’s dhoti and took him to the place where the thieves had hidden the stolen goods. After digging there, the moneylender got his entire money back.
Seeing the dog’s loyalty, the moneylender became happy and set him free. In memory of this incident the villagers built this temple. This temple is in a large area of about 200 meters. Its structure is also interesting. There are statues of dogs on both sides of the main entrance of the temple. A large number of devotees worship Lord Shiva here during the holy month of Saavan. Besides, they also worship dog i.e. Kukurdev.
