The funeral of Iranian leader Khamenei, killed in the US-Israeli attack, has started. He will be buried in Mashhad on July 9 after rituals in several cities. Leaders from all over the world have reached Tehran to pay tribute.
Tehran: As soon as the funeral rituals of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei began, the atmosphere in the capital Tehran became very sad. When Khamenei’s mortal remains were brought to the Grand Mosallah Mosque, the leaders present there could not control their emotions and burst into tears. Many senior leaders, including Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, were seen crying in front of Khamenei’s mortal remains. Videos related to this have also surfaced. Khamenei’s funeral rituals began on Saturday, which will last for several days in Iran and Iraq. Iranian officials estimate that around 20 million people will participate in these five-day rituals.
A large mourning procession will be taken out on the streets of the capital Tehran on Monday. Until then, his body will be kept in Tehran’s Grand Moselle for a final viewing. After this, rituals will also be held in cities like Qom, Baghdad, Karbala and Najaf. He will be laid to rest on July 9 at the Imam Reza shrine in the holy city of Mashhad in north-eastern Iran. Mashhad is also the birthplace of Khamenei.
Many leaders from around the world are reaching Iran to bid their last farewell to Ali Khamenei. Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, Armenia’s Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, Tajikistan’s President Emomali Rahmon, Turkmenistan’s Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and Russia’s Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev paid tribute to him.
