Ambubachi Mela 2026: The world famous Ambubachi fair has started from today i.e. 22nd June in the famous Kamakhya Devi temple situated on the Nilanchal hills of Assam. Among the 51 Shaktipeeths of the country, Kamakhya Temple is considered to be the highest and most mysterious. This is the only temple in India where there is no idol of Maa Durga, rather the Mahamudra of the Goddess is worshiped here. During the Ambubachi fair, a very unique and natural phenomenon takes place in this holy abode of Maa Kamakhya, to see and experience which lakhs of devotees, Aghori and Siddha Tantrikas from India and abroad come here.

Why is Kamakhya Temple special?

Kamakhya temple is situated on Nilanchal mountain and is considered a major center of Shakti worship. There is no idol of the goddess here, rather a natural rock is worshipped. It is believed that the vagina part of Mother Sati had fallen at this place, due to which this place became famous as Shaktipeeth. The biggest secret of the temple is that every year during Ambubachi, the goddess is believed to menstruate. For this reason, the doors of the temple are closed for three days and during this period regular worship is also stopped. There is no human idol of Mother Goddess in the sanctum sanctorum of Kamakhya temple. There is a natural rock with a natural crack in the middle. This crack itself is called Mahamudra or Yoni Mudra of the Goddess.

Why are the doors of the temple closed during the Ambubachi fair?

According to religious beliefs, at the time of Ambubachi, Mother Goddess is in the state of menstruation. This is considered the time of rest of the Goddess. Therefore the doors of the temple are closed and no devotee is allowed to enter the sanctum sanctorum. It is believed that during this period Mother Earth also receives special energy related to fertility and creative power. This is the reason why this festival is also considered a symbol of respect for nature and women power.

Why do Aghori and Tantrik come together?

Ambubachi Mela is considered one of the most important occasions for Tantra Sadhana. It is believed that during this time, Sadhana and Mantra Siddhi have special importance. This is the reason why Tantriks, Aghori, Naga Sadhus and seekers of various sects from India and abroad reach Kamakhya. Many seekers perform special rituals, meditation and sadhana during this time. It is believed that during the days of Ambubachi, spiritual energy is at its peak, due to which the effect of sadhana increases. This is the reason why this fair is considered a unique confluence of mystery, faith and Tantra Sadhana.

Recognition of red clothes and red water

Before the start of the Ambubachi fair, the priest places a white robe near the sacred stone located in the sanctum sanctorum. After three days, when the doors of the temple are opened, red colored clothes are given to the devotees as Prasad, which is considered very auspicious. Along with this, there is also a belief that during this time the water of Brahmaputra river appears red in colour. Although there are different religious and natural beliefs behind it, devotees consider it a symbol of the divine power of the Goddess.

When will the doors of the temple open?

After the start of Ambubachi fair, the doors of the temple will remain closed for three days. After this, special worship will be performed on the morning of 26th June. After the puja, the doors of the temple will be reopened for the devotees and devotees will be able to have darshan of the Mother Goddess.
