The Ministry of External Affairs organizes this yatra every year between June and August-September through two different routes. One route is Lipulekh Pass (Uttarakhand) and the other is Nathu La Pass (Sikkim). This journey is known for its religious importance and cultural significance. Hundreds of people make this journey every year. Being the abode of Lord Shiva for Hindus, it also has religious importance for people of Jainism and Buddhism.
Routes of Kailash Mansarovar Yatra
Lipulekh Pass is the main route. The journey through this route starts from Delhi and passes through Tanakpur, Pithoragarh, Dharchula, Gunji and Lipulekh Pass. This route up to the India-China border is completely motorable and includes the sacred outer circumambulation and inner circumambulation of Mount Kailash. Devotees stop at Mansarovar Lake and perform havan and puja.
Nathu La Pass route is via Sikkim. This journey also starts from Delhi and goes till Gangtok before crossing Nathu La. Due to geopolitical restrictions this route is used less. Like the Lipulekh Pass route, this route also requires very little trekking and the journey is more comfortable.

To join the pilgrimage, devotees will have to complete online registration through the MEA portal. For this, it is necessary to have a valid Indian passport or OCI card, updated medical fitness certificate and identity card issued by the government. Selected pilgrims receive complete travel planning and guidelines from the Ministry of External Affairs. Orientation sessions are also organized before departure.
