CM Vijay bid emotional farewell to Bhagyaraj.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay reached Bhagyaraj’s house and paid tribute to the late filmmaker by offering flowers. He met Bhagyaraj’s wife, actress Purnima Bhagyaraj, and his son, actor Shantanu Bhagyaraj, to console the family.
Meanwhile, Kerala Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan also thanked Tamil actor, director and screenwriter K. Condoled the demise of Bhagyaraj. He remembered Bhagyaraj as a filmmaker who changed the way storytelling was done in Tamil cinema and left a legacy that will continue to inspire future generations.

An era of Tamil cinema ends

  • In a post on X, Satheesan saluted Bhagyaraj’s contribution to Indian cinema. He described Bhagyaraj as a “screenplay king” who redefined filmmaking with his unique stories, creative vision and memorable performances.
  • The Kerala Chief Minister also recalled Bhagyaraj’s association with Malayalam cinema. He said that his role in the Malayalam film ‘Mr. Marumakan’ is still loved by the Kerala audience.
  • Satheesan wrote, “Deeply saddened by the demise of veteran Tamil actor, director and screenwriter K. Bhagyaraj. Hailed as the ‘Screenplay King’, he redefined storytelling in Tamil cinema with his unique creative vision and unforgettable performances.”
  • He further wrote, “He also had a special relationship with Malayalam cinema – his memorable role in ‘Mr. Marumakan’ is still remembered by #Keralam fans. His immense contribution to Indian cinema will continue to inspire generations. My deepest condolences to his family, colleagues and countless fans. May his soul rest in peace.”

Veteran actor Rajinikanth also reached Bhagyaraj’s house to bid him farewell. Earlier in the day, the filmmaker’s mortal remains were brought to his home, where family members, friends and people from the film industry gathered to bid him a last goodbye.

Who was Bhagyaraj?

  • Krishnaswamy Bhagyaraj, born on January 7, 1953, was considered one of the most respected filmmakers of Tamil cinema. He received the title of “King of Screenplay” for his unique writing style and storytelling style. In a career spanning several decades, he became known for films based on middle-class life, memorable dialogues and emotional stories.
  • Bhagyaraj started his career as an assistant director to filmmaker Bharathiraja, after which he became one of the top writers, directors and actors of Tamil cinema. He acted in more than 75 films, directed more than 25 films and also worked as a producer, novelist and magazine editor. He also received the Filmfare Best Actor Award for ‘Mundhanai Mudichu’.
