Diplomatic sources said that during the visit, focus will also be on maritime security, defense technology cooperation and developing the ‘Industrial Value Chain’ connecting the Bay of Bengal and Northeast India.

Japanese PM will participate in the 16th India-Japan Annual Summit. It will provide an opportunity to both sides to review and strengthen all aspects of bilateral cooperation. Besides, there will also be an exchange of views on regional and global issues of mutual interest.

This will be Prime Minister Takaichi’s first official visit to India. This visit comes after Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Tokyo for the 15th India-Japan Annual Summit in August 2025. It reflects the shared commitment of both countries to further enhance the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership.

Economic cooperation and new projects

The Japanese PM will also attend the India-Japan Business Forum meeting. Sources said that there may be an announcement regarding AI cooperation. Additionally, proposals also include a large-scale green ammonia project in Odisha, strengthening biogas cooperation and promoting regional resilience through POWERR Asia.

“The aim of the visit is to promote economic growth through investment and innovation. The focus will be on strengthening economic security, including building strong supply chains in sectors such as semiconductors and critical minerals,” a source said.

Expected documents include a joint statement on the annual summit, energy security, and memorandums of understanding (MoUs) covering areas such as AI, pharmaceuticals, batteries and critical minerals.

Strategic Partnership and Indo-Pacific

India and Japan upgraded their relations to the level of special strategic and global partnership in 2014. Sources said PM Modi’s visit to Japan last August had set the tone for the next decade, giving priority to security, economy, investment, innovation and people-to-people exchanges.

He said India is an essential partner in taking forward the updated ‘Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP)’ introduced by PM Takaichi. Both countries want to promote an international order based on the rule of law. (ANI)
