There is a mythological story behind Jagannath ji falling ill every year. According to this story, there used to be a great devotee of Lord Jagannath. His name was Madhav Das. Madhav Das was suffering from a disease for a long time. He prayed to his deity. He asked Lord Jagannath to remove his sufferings. On this, God told him that due to the deeds of his previous birth, he still had 15 days of illness left.
God took upon himself the illness of devotee Madhav Das.
Lord Jagannath told his devotee that he would be free from the disease only after 15 days, but seeing his devotee’s suffering, his heart melted.
