There are two stories behind why it is called Amer Fort. Firstly, it is said that it is named after Amba Mata, a form of Goddess Durga. The Meena Devi Durga was highly revered by the people living in these areas and hence the fort is named after her. Another story suggests that it is derived from the name Ambikeshwar, who is considered a form of Lord Shiva.
The construction of Amer Fort was started by Raja Man Singh in the late 16th century. However, the construction you see here was fully completed by Swai Jai Singh II and Raja Jai Singh I. It took 100 years to complete during the reign of Raja Man Singh to Swai Jai Singh II and Raja Jai Singh I.
The story behind the temple is interesting. It is said that Goddess Kali appeared in the dream of Raja Man Singh and asked him to look for her idol on the coast of Jessore (near Bangladesh). The king did as he was told in the dream, but after not finding the idol of the mother there, he returned to Amer with a big stone. The king’s servants cleaned the stone to find the image of Shila Devi, thus the temple of Shila Devi was built. Even today a huge crowd of devotees can be seen in this temple.
Jaigarh Fort is a fort built for the army of the king living in Amer Fort. You may be surprised to know this, but a 2 km long tunnel was built from Amer Fort, which connects to Jaigarh Fort. This tunnel was built for a situation like war, so that the king could be evacuated from here safely. Seeing such a plan shows how efficient the kings of that time were.
This is a magnificent entrance from where the Maharaja used to access the palaces built inside the fort. While visiting the Amer Fort, you will see a small window here. You may find it interesting, this window is not just a part of beautiful architecture nor was it made for ventilation, but it was made keeping in mind the women of the royal family. From this window, she used to watch the events happening in the main hall. At that time, women were not allowed to come among the people, so entertainment was arranged for them in the hall.
