Is your visa data safe while VFS Global is under investigation in Europe? Should private companies handle sensitive biometric and passport data? Has the visa process now become a business of profit rather than transparency? Are governments gradually losing control of borders to private hands?
VFS Global Investigation: For millions of Indians who every year dream of holidays, higher education or a career abroad, their visa journey no longer begins at the gate of an embassy. Instead, the journey begins in the luxurious, heavily guarded offices of an outsourcing company called VFS Global. But do you know that the company to which you are handing over your passport, bank statements, and your fingerprints (biometrics) is currently on the radar of the European Union (EU)?
In a sensational revelation, reports by Politico and The Indian Express have exposed internal and confidential EU reports that have shaken the entire system of international travel. Negligence in data handling, hidden fees, and this ‘privatisation’ of border management has now taken the form of a major international controversy.
Is your confidential information safe in private hands?
The visa application process is not just a paperwork process. It is a treasure trove of the most confidential information of any citizen – like bank account details, salary slips, family details, passport numbers and the most sensitive biometric data (fingerprints and facial scans).
The biggest question raised in the internal investigation of the European Union is whether this private contractor is capable of securing immigration data on such a large scale? This concern deepened when in the year 2023, a major ‘breach’ (violation) was admitted in the Ahmedabad office of VFS itself, where some employees and external agents were seriously accused of helping in fake biometric enrollment of applicants traveling to Canada. Although VFS says they have a ‘zero tolerance’ policy against fraud, the incident clearly exposed the shortcomings of the security system.
Benefit of compulsion in the name of ‘optional’ services?
The second most bitter aspect of this dispute is the indiscriminate turnover of visa applications. Technically the official visa fees are set by governments, but the typical applicant has to pay an additional service charge to the VFS. The game doesn’t end here; The real suspense begins with the maze of these so-called ‘optional’ services:
- Recovery in the name of courier returns and SMS alerts.
- Huge premium fees for help filling out forms and prime-time appointments.
- Aggressive marketing that creates fear among applicants that their visa may be rejected if they do not avail of ‘premium lounges’ or additional services.
- Social media is flooded with consumer complaints about how Indian travelers are being fleeced under the guise of Schengen visas.
- However, VFS claims that all these premium services are completely voluntary and have no bearing on the decision to grant or deny a visa.
Monopoly Terror: When You Have No Other Choice!
The most surprising truth of this whole matter is that a common traveler has no other option. If the embassy of any country has appointed VFS Global as its official partner, then you will have to hand over all your documents to them even if you don’t want to. Analysts believe that firms like VFS are now handling sovereign functions that once fell directly under governments. Due to this ‘monopoly’, no concrete action is taken on problems like stalling of websites, huge shortage of appointments and negligence in customer care.
After all, who has control over the country’s borders?
VFS Global today operates more than 3,500 centers in 141 countries and serves 71 governments. The company’s repeated defense is that it handles only “administrative and non-judgmental work” and that governments have the final authority to grant visas. But the big suspense and ideological war is about this: Have governments completely handed over the security of their borders and the initial entry point of migration to a commercial company? As demand for travel continues to grow globally, this EU investigation is a reminder to travelers around the world that there is a lot going on behind the scenes in the game of international travel, hidden from plain sight!
