The Mumbai Indians (MI) lead pacer Jasprit Bumrah has not featured in the team’s playing XI for their final IPL 2026 clash against the Rajasthan Royals at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Sunday, May 24.
The MI have already been eliminated from the race for the playoffs after a string of inconsistent results, which has left them playing strictly for pride. The five-time IPL champions are currently sitting at the ninth spot with just four wins in 13 matches, earning 8 points and having a net run rate (NRR) of -0.510, leaving them with no mathematical chance of making it to the next round.
The Hardik Pandya-led side will conclude their season with a disappointing league-stage exit. Since winning their fifth and last IPL triumph, the Mumbai Indians have struggled to mirror their historic dominance, missing the playoffs in multiple seasons and blowing hot and cold.

Why is Jasprit Bumrah not Playing vs RR?
As the Mumbai Indians are set to conclude their campaign by playing the final match in front of their home ground, they have opted to field a playing XI without their premier speedster, Jasprit Bumrah, who has been the five-time IPL champions’ most dependable weapon over the years.
Speaking at the toss presentation in front of the home crowd, MI skipper Hardik Pandya confirmed that the team management decided to rest the ace speedster for this final game of the season, drafting veteran pacer Deepak Chahar into the playing XI as his replacement.
The decision to rest Jasprit Bumrah stemmed from workload management, as the team looks ahead to a packed international calendar and prioritizes the longevity of their premier fast bowler. Since the MI are mathematically out of the playoff race and languished near the bottom of the points table, management saw no reason to risk their spearhead in an inconsequential dead rubber.

At the press conference on the eve of the match against the RR, the MI head coach, Mahela Jayawardene, revealed that Bumrah had been playing through minor physical discomforts over the last few weeks. Bumrah, who was part of Team India’s T20 World Cup title defence success in March this year, checked in at the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE) before joining the MI squad, sparking concerns over his fitness.
According to Jayawardene, the 32-year-old speedster carried a slight, unspecified niggle throughout India’s successful title defense, which necessitated a highly cautious approach from the franchise. To prevent further aggravation, MI allowed Bumrah to join the pre-training campaign just five days before their opening match against the Kolkata Knight Riders.
