Indonesia US Defense Deal: The possible defense agreement between Indonesia and America has sparked a new debate. Under this deal, American fighter jets can get special exemption in Indonesian airspace, on which protests have started within the country.
Global politics is changing rapidly at the moment. On one hand, the tension between Iran and America is said to be at its peak, on the other hand, Indonesia, the country with the world’s largest Muslim population, has taken a step which has sparked a new debate.
According to reports, Indonesia is preparing for a major defense agreement with America. Under this deal, American fighter jets can get the facility of flying and landing in Indonesian airspace without special permission. At present the draft of this agreement is being prepared.
What is the whole matter?
According to American media reports, this deal was agreed upon in a meeting between Indonesia’s Defense Minister and US Defense Minister Pete Hegseth. However, many important points of the agreement have not yet been made public. Experts believe that this agreement can give America greater freedom to use Indonesia’s strategic resources.

Why are questions like ‘surrender’ arising?
There is opposition within Indonesia regarding this deal.
- Foreign Ministry’s protest: According to international agency Reuters, Indonesia’s Foreign Ministry has expressed concern over this agreement. He says that this may increase regional tension.
- Disagreements within the government: This is the first time that two major ministries of the same country, Defense and Foreign, are seen face to face regarding a major defense agreement.
- Questions have already been raised: Even after the tariff deal signed in February, questions were raised on the Indonesian government. About 65 organizations had filed a petition against this policy and called it a move like bowing down to America.
Why is there pressure on Prabowo government?
Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has been in the news for his decisions in the past also. August 2025 saw a change in his policies following discontent and protests within the country. After this he grew closer to America. Indonesia also took part in the US-led initiative on the Gaza issue and announced the sending of peacekeepers.
Why is Indonesia important for America?
Indonesia’s geographical location makes it very strategically important.
- This country is located between the South China Sea and the Indo-Pacific region.
- From here it is easy to keep an eye on the activities of ASEAN countries.
- It can play an important role for America in balancing the growing influence of China.
Experts say that since 2020, there has been a change in Indonesia’s foreign policy and it seems to be gradually moving closer to America.
Is Indonesia’s attitude changing?
Indonesia, which was once a major supporter of the Non-Aligned Movement, now seems to be moving away from its traditional policy. In an article published in the Jakarta Post, analyst Eric Jones wrote that President Prabowo is trying to please the American leadership and for this the country’s strategic independence is being put at stake.
