Scientists have developed the first indigenous antibiotic drug ‘Napithromycin’, which can reduce infection in three doses. The World Health Organization reports that pneumonia is the leading infectious cause of death in children worldwide. More than 7.25 lakh children under five years of age die every year due to pneumonia, including about 1.90 lakh newborns. The risk of this disease is also higher in the elderly. Doctors say that this disease can be caused by any bacteria, virus or fungus.

The antibiotic nafithromycin has been developed in collaboration with the Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC). It is the country’s first indigenously developed antibiotic aimed at combating antimicrobial resistance.
This medicine will be given to CABP patients once a day for three days. Over 15 years, many clinical trials have been conducted on this drug. This also includes Phase I and II trials conducted in the US and Europe. This drug has recently completed the third phase in India.
