When in Kashmir…..well, now you can book your Uber to travel across Dal Lake. Cab Service Provider, Uber has introduced its first water transport service in India, offering tourists and locals the chance to book shikara rides on the iconic Dal Lake in Srinagar through its digital app. The service aims to blend technology with tradition while boosting tourism in Kashmir.
This initiative elevates cultural heritage
Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha expressed pride in the launch, emphasising how technology can enhance cultural heritage.
“Launch of Uber Shikara in Srinagar is a testament to creative ways technology can enhance our cultural heritage. This offering in upcoming tourist season will provide visitors a seamless way to experience timeless charm of Shikara rides, a hallmark of J&K’s beauty,” Sinha wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
Dal Lake, often referred to as the ‘jewel of Srinagar,’ is a large freshwater lake and a major tourist attraction in the region. It serves not only as a hub for recreation but also supports commercial activities like fishing.
What are the features of Uber Shikara?
In its initial phase, Uber has onboarded seven shikaras and plans to expand the fleet based on demand. The service allows bookings for 1-hour rides between 10 am and 5 pm, accommodating up to four passengers per ride from Shikara Ghat No. 16.
Users can book their rides up to 15 days in advance, with a minimum notice of 12 hours. Uber has also confirmed that it is not charging any fees from its shikara partners, ensuring the full fare is passed directly to the boat owners.
“Uber Shikara is our humble attempt to blend technology and tradition to give a seamless experience to travellers for their Shikara ride. We are proud to create this iconic experience enhancing accessibility and uplifting tourism in the breathtaking landscape of Kashmir,” said Prabhjeet Singh, president of Uber India and South Asia.
What are Shikaras?
Shikaras are traditional wooden boats commonly seen on Dal Lake and other water bodies in Srinagar. These boats, typically seating six people, are steered by a boatman seated at the back. While they are still used for fishing and transport, most are now reserved for tourists seeking scenic rides.

The president of the Shikara Owners Association, Wali Mohammad Bhatt, highlighted the significance of the initiative, stating that there are around 4,000 shikaras on Dal Lake. He expressed hope that Uber will onboard more shikara partners as the service expands.
Uber Shikara follows similar water transport services launched by the company in European cities like Venice. The initiative is expected to enhance tourism in Jammu and Kashmir, making the traditional shikara experience more accessible to visitors from around the world.
