Dandapani wrote, “The Japanese shopkeeper said that they are a ‘high-trust society’ (a society that has a lot of trust in each other) where theft is very rare and they respect India a lot. The shopkeeper said that what was worse than theft was offering him money after being caught.”
After this the shopkeeper called the local police. The tour manager of the group accompanied the woman to the police station. According to Dandapani, the woman made the matter worse by trying to give money even at the police station. Dandapani said, “Even at the police station, the woman offered money. But the Japanese police did not like this joke at all.”
He claimed that the police explained to the woman how seriously theft is taken in Japan and can even lead to jail time. “They told her how severe the punishment for theft was and that she could go to jail. But because she was an Indian and they respected India so much, she was let off with a stern warning,” he wrote.
The post has gone viral on social media, sparking debate on tourist behavior abroad, cultural differences and the importance of respecting local laws and customs when traveling to other countries. However, the claims made in this post have not been independently verified.
