India, Pakistan Set for Asian Games Cricket Gold Medal Clash

India and Pakistan will meet in the men’s T20 cricket final at the 2026 Asian Games on Saturday, October 3, with the two sides competing for the gold medal at Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin, Japan.

India secured their place in the title clash with a 124-run victory over Sri Lanka, while Pakistan defeated Bangladesh by six wickets in the other semifinal.

The final, scheduled to begin at 10 am IST, will bring together two teams that have demonstrated their ability to perform under pressure during the knockout stage. India will enter the contest as defending champions after winning gold at the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou.

India’s emphatic semifinal victory has given the team considerable momentum ahead of the contest. However, Pakistan’s successful chase against Bangladesh has also set up a competitive final, with both sides now one win away from the top of the podium.

Ishan Kishan Leads India’s Batting Charge

India’s place in the final was secured through a strong batting performance followed by a dominant display with the ball against Sri Lanka on Thursday.

After being sent in to bat, India posted 169 for seven in their allotted 20 overs. Ishan Kishan played a decisive role, scoring an unbeaten 80 off 46 deliveries. His innings included four boundaries and five sixes, helping India recover from an unsettled start and build a competitive total.

India lost Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson early in the innings, putting pressure on the middle order. Teenage batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi provided an important contribution with 38 runs off 21 balls, keeping the scoring rate high during the middle overs.

Kishan then took charge of the innings, combining aggressive stroke play with calculated batting to guide India towards a strong total. His unbeaten knock proved central to India’s victory.

The Indian bowlers subsequently dismantled Sri Lanka’s batting line-up, restricting the opposition to just 45 runs. Jasprit Bumrah struck twice in the opening over, immediately putting Sri Lanka under pressure.

Axar Patel and Abhishek Sharma also claimed two wickets each, while India’s fielding unit contributed through crucial run-outs. Sri Lanka’s innings ended well before the completion of the allotted overs, handing India a 124-run victory.

Pakistan Overcome Bangladesh to Reach Final

Pakistan booked their place in the final with a six-wicket win over Bangladesh in a rain-affected semifinal, which was reduced to 13 overs per side.

After winning the toss and opting to field, Pakistan restricted Bangladesh to 111 for seven. Towhid Hridoy was the leading batter for Bangladesh, scoring 42 off 25 deliveries, but the team struggled to maintain momentum against Pakistan’s bowling attack.

Sufyan Moqim emerged as Pakistan’s leading wicket-taker with three wickets, while Arafat Minhas claimed two. Their efforts prevented Bangladesh from building a larger total despite Hridoy’s contribution.

Pakistan’s chase began with early setbacks. The team lost four wickets for 53 runs, giving Bangladesh an opportunity to put pressure on the batting side.

However, Abdul Samad and Hasan Nawaz steadied the innings with an unbeaten partnership of 59 runs. Samad scored 30 not out off 15 balls, while Hasan contributed an unbeaten 27 off 22 deliveries.

Their partnership helped Pakistan reach 112 for four in 11.3 overs, completing the chase with nine balls remaining and securing a place in the gold-medal match.

India Aim to Defend Their Asian Games Title

The final will give India an opportunity to retain the men’s cricket gold medal they won at the previous Asian Games. The team entered the knockout stage after its quarterfinal against Afghanistan was abandoned because of rain.

India progressed on the basis of its higher ranking before defeating Sri Lanka in the semifinal. Pakistan also advanced from a rain-abandoned quarterfinal before beating Bangladesh to reach the final.

The two teams will now meet with the tournament’s top prize at stake. India’s batting depth and bowling performance against Sri Lanka will be important factors, while Pakistan will look to build on the late recovery that secured its semifinal victory.

The final will also provide an opportunity for players from both sides to make their mark in a major multi-sport competition. With the gold medal on offer, the teams will have little room for mistakes in the concluding match.

Weather Could Influence the Final

Rain has already disrupted the men’s cricket competition, forcing changes to the format of several matches. Pakistan’s semifinal against Bangladesh was shortened to 13 overs per side, while both teams advanced from their respective quarterfinals after the matches were abandoned.

Weather conditions will therefore remain a factor ahead of Saturday’s final. The match is scheduled to take place at Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin, with play beginning at 10 am IST.

Bangladesh and Sri Lanka will compete in the bronze-medal match earlier on Saturday.

For India, the final represents a chance to extend its success at the previous Asian Games and finish the competition with another gold medal. Pakistan, meanwhile, will look to overcome the defending champions and claim the men’s cricket title.

The two sides will take the field knowing that the result will determine the Asian Games champions, bringing the men’s T20 competition to its conclusion.
