With the magic of spin by Axar Patel (4 wickets) and the fast bowling of the famous Krishna-Gurnoor Brar, India restricted England to 258 runs in the first ODI. India has got a target of 259 runs to win. Joe Root scored unbeaten 76 runs.
edgbaston [यूके]July 14 (ANI): On the basis of the brilliant bowling of Akshar Patel and the disciplined bowling of famous Krishna and Gurnoor Brar, India restricted England to 258 runs in the first ODI match played at Edgbaston on Tuesday.
The trio of Akshar, Prasidh and Gurnoor showed wonders
Patel was India’s most successful bowler, taking four wickets and breaking England’s resistance with his accurate left-arm spin. Prasidh Krishna and Gurnoor Brar also took two wickets each. Jasprit Bumrah completed his 150th ODI wicket by taking one wicket and India kept England in control throughout the innings.
England were all out for 258 runs in 47.5 overs after electing to bat first in the first ODI against India. The hosts started well but lost momentum in the middle overs, losing five wickets for just 19 runs. After this Root and Dawson together handled the innings.
The partnership of Root and Dawson took over England
Joe Root scored the most runs for England by playing an unbeaten inning of 76 runs. He took charge of the innings and guided the lower order batsmen. Liam Dawson made a valuable contribution of 68 runs, which helped England recover from a difficult situation. Ben Duckett scored 43 runs, while Will Jacques added 20 and Jofra Archer added 12 runs in the end. Apart from these, all the other English batsmen were seen struggling to get the ball on the bat.
For India, Patel became the second Indian spinner to take four wickets between the 41st and 50th overs of an ODI innings, equaling Ravindra Jadeja’s feat against Sri Lanka in 2013.
England made a positive start with Duckett and his opening partner Jacob Bethel setting a steady platform, but the Indian bowlers struck back at regular intervals.
Root showed composure under pressure, rotating the strike and building partnerships to prevent the team from collapsing completely. Dawson complemented his approach with an aggressive counter-innings, which helped England cross the 250-run mark after being in trouble.
Now India will need 259 runs to win the first ODI and take an early lead in the three-match series.
The last time a target of less than 300 was successfully defended in a full 50-over ODI at Edgbaston was in the Champions Trophy 2013, when South Africa defended 236 against Pakistan. (ANI)
