The first match of the T20 series between India and England ended without any result. The match played on Wednesday 1 July at Chester-le-Street in Durham County was washed out due to rain. In this match, Team India batted first and scored 189 runs. But before England could set out to achieve this target, the rain set in and showed no signs of stopping. Due to this, this match had to be canceled and thus the same old sequence of India-England match continued in Chester-le-Street.
The series of 5 T20 matches started from Wednesday 1st July and the first match was at the Riverside Ground, where the history of India-England matches has not been good. The Indian team was playing T20 International here for the first time but before that it had experienced this ground in 2 ODI matches. Both these matches were played in 2002 and 2011 and both were canceled due to rain. Coincidentally, in both those matches, the Indian team batted first and the match was canceled due to rain during England’s innings.
The threat of rain was looming over the T20 match held on Wednesday and there was a fear that there might be disappointment for the third time too. This is what happened after all. Team India won the toss and decided to bat first and rain drops started appearing from the very first over. During the entire innings, light sprinkling was clearly visible on 2-3 occasions but there was no chance of stopping the match even once. But in the 20th over, the rain started getting heavier and as soon as the Indian team’s batting ended and the players reached the dressing room, this drizzle turned into a heavy shower, which did not stop again. Ultimately the umpires had to decide to cancel the match.
