More than 4 crore income tax returns have been filed so far for the assessment year 2026-27. The Income Tax Department has appealed to the taxpayers not to wait for the last date of July 31, 2026 and to file their returns on time to avoid stress.
New Delhi [भारत]July 27 (ANI): According to the Income Tax Department, more than 4 crore income tax returns (ITRs) have been filed for assessment year 2026-27.
The I-T department has urged taxpayers to file their ITR-1 and ITR-2 returns before the deadline of July 31, 2026, to avoid last-minute rush and stress.
“4 crore+ ITR filings for AY 2026-27 and counting! Avoid the stress of July 31, 2026 deadline and file your ITR 1 and 2 early,” the IT-department said in a statement on XYZ.
Nirmala Sitharaman praised the record filing
Last week, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had highlighted record income tax return (ITR) filing and improvements in grievance redressal. The FM had also urged the Income Tax Department to expedite refund processing to strengthen taxpayer confidence and increase ease of compliance.
Addressing the 167th Income Tax Day celebrations, which was the first after the enactment of the “Income Tax Act, 2025”, Sitharaman emphasized that the role of the department has expanded beyond revenue collection to fairness, ease of doing business and citizen-centric service delivery. He outlined the 5Rs of responsible tax administration.
Great performance of e-filing portal
He further said that the ongoing income tax filing season has achieved many important achievements, with the e-filing portal handling more than one crore taxpayer interactions in a single day after increasing its computing capacity and bandwidth. Peak daily interactions reached approximately 16 million. As of July 21, more than 3.2 crore income tax returns (ITRs) had been filed, of which 94 per cent had been verified and 60 per cent had been processed.
improvement in grievance redressal
Highlighting reforms in grievance redressal, Sitharaman said the department resolved 94 per cent of about 78,000 complaints received through the Centralized Public Grievance Redress and Monitoring System (CPGRAMS) during FY 2025-26. The average resolution time reduced from 57 days to 28 days, while almost two-thirds of complaints were resolved within three weeks.
He said that on the e-redressal platform, 95 per cent of about 3.5 lakh complaints have been resolved, and the average resolution time has come down to 42 days. (ANI)
