Story of this temple of Mahadev

It is said that Lord Shiva himself came here in the form of Gopi to see the Maharasas of Shri Krishna. The story of this temple is said to be related to Dwaparayuga. According to the story, Lord Shri Krishna was performing Maharasas with the Gopis in Vrindavan. There was this discussion in all three worlds. When Mahadev came to know about this, he also reached Vrindavan from Kailash to have darshan of Shri Krishna, but only Gopis were allowed to perform Raas.

At that time Lord Shiva made a plan. He changed his disguise and took the form of Gopi. Then he joined the Maharasas in the form of the same Gopi and danced with Lord Krishna. When Shri Krishna came to know that he was not a Gopi but Mahadev himself, Shri Krishna became very happy. Shri Krishna named Shiva as ‘Gopeshwar’. It means lord of gopis. He also requested Mahadev to stay in Braj forever. Since then Lord Shiva is present in Vrindavan in the form of Gopeshwar.
