RBI Credit Card New Rules: Credit card users have got a big relief from the new rules of RBI. Now even after the due date, you will get a grace period of 3 days. Know complete information related to late fees, credit score and new billing rules.
Credit Card Late Payment Grace Period: In today’s time, credit card is not just a convenience but has become a part of the everyday financial needs of millions of people. From shopping to bill payment, travel booking to emergency expenses, the use of credit cards has increased rapidly. But the biggest concern with this is timely bill payment. Many times, due to busyness or mistake, the due date passes and immediately the fear of late fees, interest and credit score deterioration starts.
Now the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has given big relief to credit card users. Under the new rules, now banks will not be allowed to impose Late Payment Charges immediately after missing the due date. Customers will be given a mandatory grace period of 3 days, through which they will be able to make their payment without additional penalty.
3 day grace period now mandatory
According to the new rule of RBI, if the due date of a customer’s credit card bill passes, then the bank will not be able to charge late fees immediately. He will have to give additional time of at least 3 days. For example, if your due date is 5th, then you can pay the bill till 8th without any Late Payment Charge. This means that small delays will no longer become a huge financial burden for you. This rule has especially brought relief to those people who sometimes are not able to make payments on time due to technical reasons, banking delays or mistakes.

Now Late Fee will be charged only on the outstanding amount and not on the entire bill.
Earlier, in many cases, late fees and interest were charged on the entire bill amount, causing additional financial pressure on customers. But according to the new guidelines of RBI, now late fees will be imposed only on the outstanding amount. Its direct benefit will be that customers’ interest will be reduced and unnecessary financial loss will be avoided. This change makes the credit card billing system more transparent and customer friendly.
When will credit score be affected?
Many people believe that their credit score will deteriorate as soon as the due date comes, but now this will not happen. According to RBI rules, your account will not be considered “Past Due” until the grace period of 3 days is completed. That means if you make the payment within the additional 3 days, there will be no negative impact on your CIBIL Score or Credit History. However, if payment is not made even after the grace period is over, then it will have a direct impact on your credit score, which may affect loans or other financial facilities in future.
The bank will have to give information first
RBI has also clarified that if a bank makes any change in late fees, interest rates or credit card rules, it will be mandatory for it to inform its customers at least 30 days in advance. With this, customers will not have to face sudden increased charges or changed rules. This transparency is being considered an important step towards increasing trust in the banking system.
Still, timely payment is the best option.
Even though RBI has given 3 days relief to customers, financial experts believe that the habit of timely bill payment is the safest option. Making payments on time can not only avoid late fees and interest, but also maintain a strong credit score. This helps a lot in taking home loan, personal loan or business loan in future.
Relief for customers, transparency in banking system
This new rule of RBI has brought relief to millions of customers who used to face huge penalties due to small delays. Grace period of 3 days, late fee only on outstanding amount and mandatory advance notice, all these changes are steps to give priority to customer interest. Now all that is needed is that customers keep their financial behavior disciplined and use credit cards responsibly. Because convenience is beneficial only when it is used wisely.
