UPPCL Smart Meter Update: Heat is increasing and so is the need for electricity. At such a time, the Uttar Pradesh government has taken a decision which has given great relief to lakhs of consumers. Amidst the ongoing debate regarding smart meters in the state, the government has now banned its installation. Along with this decision, many new rules have also been implemented for the consumers, which are directly related to their convenience.

Smart meter banned, investigation will be done first

Energy Minister AK Sharma has made it clear that a technical committee has been formed on the instructions of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. This committee will examine all aspects related to smart meters. Until its report comes, the work of installing new smart meters in the entire state will remain stopped. This step has been taken following complaints in which consumers had raised questions regarding billing and balance.

What did the houses where smart meters have been installed get?

The government has also given relief to those consumers who already have smart meters installed in their homes. Now 45 days time has been given for meter conversion, in which no one’s connection will be disconnected. Even if someone’s balance runs out, electricity will continue for some time, so there will be no problem of sudden darkness. Also, there has been a ban on power cuts on Sundays and government holidays, so that consumers do not have to face additional pressure.

Now complete information about balance will alert through SMS

The government has decided to launch a new 5-level SMS alert system. Under this, consumers will continue to get information about their balance from time to time. When the balance is low, about to expire or there is a situation of connection disconnection, information will be given in advance through message. With this, consumers will be able to remain alert in advance and avoid the problem of sudden power cut.

Smart meter vs ordinary meter, understand the difference in simple language

In an ordinary electricity meter, every month the employee comes home and takes the readings and after that the bill is prepared. Whereas the smart meter is completely digital, in which the readings automatically reach the department. In a normal meter, electricity is used first and then the bill has to be deposited, whereas a smart meter works like a mobile recharge, first enter the balance and then use the electricity.

The specialty of smart meter is that you can see your daily electricity consumption on the mobile app. But its biggest concern has been that as soon as the balance is exhausted, power can be cut immediately, due to which there was dissatisfaction among the people.

Strict instructions in view of heat, there will be no cut in supply

In view of the scorching heat, the government has given clear instructions to the electricity department that there should be no cut in supply. Faulty transformers should be replaced immediately and problems like loose wires or sparking should be rectified without delay. The officials have been asked to personally contact the consumers whose connections have already been disconnected and resolve their problems. The Energy Minister has also made it clear that consumer satisfaction is the priority of the government and officials will be held accountable for any negligence.

This decision of the government clearly indicates that no new system will be implemented without complete preparation and trust. This ban has brought relief to the consumers amid the questions raised regarding smart meters, but the future direction will now be decided by the report of the technical committee.
