Important information for those who port their mobile number, these rules are changing from July 1

Porting a mobile number will no longer be a child’s play, nor will you be able to change the number whenever you want. Actually, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India i.e. TRAI has implemented a rule for porting a mobile number. This rule will come into effect across the country from July 1, 2024.

According to this rule, mobile users will now have to wait for at least 7 days to port their number. Till now users did not have to wait to port their mobile number. TRAI has given the reason of preventing fraud behind implementing this rule.

Why the new rule was implemented

TRAI has implemented a new rule to prevent frauds happening through mobile phone numbers. In view of the incidents of SIM card swapping, a new rule has been implemented by TRAI.

How the new rule will work

TRAI has given the option to reject the request for mobile number port within 7 days. This is the reason why there is a delay in issuing the Unique Porting Code i.e. UPC. Under the new rule, if the UPC code is not sent within 7 days of SIM card swapping and changing, then it means that now no one will be able to misuse the SIM card by getting it issued immediately. This means that no one will be able to misuse it by getting a fake new SIM issued.

What is mobile number porting?

Mobile Number Portability i.e. MNP is a service offered by telecom service providers, which allows their users to shift to another telecom service. In this process, the user does not have to change his mobile number. If you are not happy with your service provider, then you can port your mobile number.
