If you see a lump in the body, do not be careless, know when you should go to the doctor? – News Himachali News Himachali

Feeling a lump in any part of the body is worrisome, because lumps in the body are considered a warning sign of cancer. Dr. Mudit Aggarwal, Unit Head and Senior Consultant, Head and Neck Oncology Unit – 2, RGCIRC (Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute and Research Centre), New Delhi, says that however, it is important to understand that not every lump is cancerous.

Many times a lump may be felt due to an infection, cyst, fatty growth or any other non-cancerous reason. In such a situation, considering a lump as dangerous without examining it or ignoring it completely, both are wrong.

Where can a lump be seen?

Lumps can appear in any part of the body including chest, neck, armpits, groin (inner parts of joints like elbow, knee etc.), hands and feet. If a lump persists for more than two or three weeks, continues to grow, or changes in its shape, a doctor should be examined.

Be cautious when these symptoms appear

  • There may be no pain but the size of the lump keeps increasing

  • The lump appears hard and stuck to the surrounding tissue

  • There is redness around the area, it starts forming like a wound or there is a change in the color of the skin.

  • Along with the lump, persistent fever also started coming.

  • Along with the appearance of lumps, weight loss occurs without any reason, there is fatigue or excessive sweating at night.

If this happens, do not ignore even the painless lump.

It should be kept in mind that not every cancerous lump causes pain. In the case of many cancers, only a painless lump is visible in the initial stage. When there is no pain, people often ignore it and do not consult a doctor. Such delays can give time for the disease to progress.

How do doctors identify lumps?

The doctor usually starts with a medical history and some physical examination. Based on the findings, the following tests may be ordered:

  • ultrasound

  • mammography

  • CT scan or MRI

  • blood test

  • biopsy if needed

  • A biopsy helps determine whether the lump is cancerous or normal.

Keep these things in mind

Although many lumps are not dangerous, only a doctor can tell the exact cause of this lump. If a new lump is visible in the body, the lump persists, keeps growing, there is no pain, the lump is hard and seems stable at one place, then you should consult a doctor. Especially if along with the lump, any other symptoms like weight loss, fever, fatigue or excessive sweating at night are also seen, then medical consultation becomes even more important. Diagnosis at the right time makes treatment easier and gives better results.
