Along with the heat, power load is increasing in Delhi-NCR and problems related to air conditioning (AC) are increasing. On Wednesday, a retired IAS officer died in a fire in his indoor AC in South Delhi’s Hauz Khas area. This is not an isolated incident, even before this many people have lost their lives due to fire in AC. In such a situation, the question arises that what are the reasons for AC fire and what should be done for safety.
TV9 Bharatvarsh spoke to AC seller and AC expert Vishal. He has given the main 5 reasons for explosion in AC. By keeping these in mind, you can remain safe and the AC can be used properly.
gas leak with spark
The most common reason for explosion in AC is gas leak as well as spark. Actually experts say that AC contains R32, R290 or R22 gas. R32 and R290 are mildly flammable. In such a situation, if there is a leak in the pipe and there is even a small spark nearby, then a fire can occur. Keep in mind that your AC pipe or its connected line should not pass through such places where any work related to fire is done.
fill with wrong gas
Many times, in order to save money, people or mechanics fill local or other cheap flammable gas in the AC. Due to this, the compressor may burst as the pressure increases. Whenever you get your AC serviced next time, call a certified mechanic and get the gas filled only after getting the correct information. Many times health and even life can be harmed due to cheap shopping.

compressor overheating
Overheating is also the reason for fire or explosion in AC. The reason behind this could be dirty filters, clogged condenser coils or low gas, as this increases the load on the compressor. Due to continuous running it gets heated to 200°C+. The pressure inside increases so much that the compressor can burst. Along with paying attention to the maintenance of AC, one should also avoid running it continuously.
electrical fault
Experts say that cases like fire in AC happen only when short circuit occurs due to loose wiring, bad capacitor or voltage fluctuation. The spark causes the gas leaking nearby to catch fire. This risk increases further due to moisture in monsoon. It is important that you take care of things like wiring, voltage fluctuation.
not vacuuming and air remaining
It is necessary to vacuum the system before filling the gas. If air remains inside then oxygen plus gas and plus pressure can cause a blast in the AC.

What to do to avoid AC blast?
- Service should be done only from the service center or technician of an authorized company and the service bill must be taken.
- While welding in R32/R290 AC, it is important to remove the gas completely, so ask the mechanic to take special care of it.
- Do not keep any inflammable material, garbage, oil etc. near the outdoor unit of AC.
- If you notice any strange noise, burning smell or ice accumulating from the AC, then immediately turn it off and disconnect the power from the MCB.
- It is always good to keep the temperature of AC between 24 to 26. If the temperature is lower than that, the pressure on the AC compressor increases.
