Viktor Hovland secured the Travelers Championship after defeating world number one Scottie Scheffler in a tense Monday play-off, sinking a decisive seven-foot birdie.
Scheffler then missed a short birdie putt, handing Hovland an eighth PGA Tour victory and a first title since March 2025, following four rounds where both contenders pushed each other hard.
The duel reached extra holes when Scheffler closed a one-shot gap during the final round. Hovland started Sunday ahead by a single stroke, but Scheffler posted a closing 68 to reach 21 under. Rain interrupted the final day’s play, forcing the playoff to move to Monday, adding another layer of pressure for both players and organisers.
Once the play-off began, Hovland immediately applied pressure with a birdie at the first extra hole. Scheffler, chasing a second Travelers Championship after winning in 2024, could not convert a short birdie attempt. That miss ended the contest and confirmed Hovland’s victory, rewarding consistent play across four days in challenging, weather-affected conditions in the United States.
| Player | Final Score | Final Round | Result |

Hovland, aged 28, spoke about the mental and technical demands of facing Scheffler in such a tight contest. Norwegian supporters, who were in the United States for the World Cup, added strong vocal backing. Their presence helped create a lively atmosphere as Hovland chased a return to winning form on the PGA Tour.
“It has been stressful but it was unbelievable, especially after Scottie hit it so close, said Hovland. I knew I had to bring my best to have a chance of beating him. He certainly brought it out of me and I couldn’t be happier. I know how good I can get. I keep pushing myself and I keep wanting to get better. When I fall short, it really p***** me off but I did a really good job. I didn’t get off to a great start on Thursday but I didn’t let it bother me as much. It was a blast.”
Scheffler reflected on the narrow defeat and the decisive missed putt, while stressing the overall strength of recent performances. The disappointment of falling short of a second Travelers Championship title was balanced by confidence in current form, with Scheffler highlighting solid ball striking and several key putts that had extended the challenge before the play-off.
He said of his missed birdie putt: “I hit it on-line, it was just a little bit firm. It was one of those putts you had to make. It was disappointing, especially with the putts I made last night to stay in the tournament. I played solid over the course of four days. There were obviously some shots I would like back but overall it was a good, solid week. I am disappointed with the finish but feel my game is in a good spot. I struck the ball really nicely. It was a week where I was close but not quite good enough.”
Hovland’s win at the Travelers Championship against an in-form Scheffler underlines a strong response after a slow start on Thursday. The playoff success, achieved under rain delays and heavy expectation, restores Hovland to the PGA Tour winners’ circle and confirms Scheffler’s continued presence near the top of leaderboards despite a frustrating final stroke.
