In a post on Twitter, the Prime Minister said the courage, sacrifice and commitment shown by the Santhal heroes in protecting the country’s honor and tribal identity will continue to inspire generations. The Prime Minister wrote, “Hul Day is a powerful symbol of the extraordinary spirit of our tribal community, who are ready to die for the motherland. On this glorious occasion of Indian history, I pay my tribute to all those brave warriors – Sido-Kanhu, Chand-Bhairav, and Phulo-Jhano – who stood strong against the injustice of foreign rule. The story of their struggle and sacrifice to protect tribal dignity and respect will remain fresh in the hearts of the countrymen. Will keep filling the energy.”

Earlier today, President Draupadi Murmu also paid tribute to the heroes of the Santhal rebellion on the occasion of Hool Day, saying that their “bravery, sacrifice and martyrdom will always inspire all fellow citizens of the country”.

In a post on Twitter, the President recalled the sacrifice of the leaders of the historic Santhal uprising of 1855, one of India’s earliest organized rebellions against British colonial rule. Murmu said, “On the occasion of ‘Hool Day’, I pay my humble tribute to the immortal brave men and women of Sido-Kanhu, Chand-Bhairav, Phulo-Jhano and Santhal rebellion for their sacrifice and martyrdom. They waged a historic struggle against the exploitation of the tribal society and to protect their identity. What is hool day?

Hool Day, which is observed on 30 June every year, commemorates the Santhal Hool of 1855, which occurred two years before the 1957 rebellion. On June 30, 1855, more than 10,000 Santhal villagers gathered in Bhognadih in present-day Jharkhand and declared their independence from British rule and launched an armed rebellion against exploitative landlords, unfair taxation and forced labour.
