‘Harassment’ by wife, call to father: What we know so far about Delhi’s judge’s suicide

New Delhi: A Delhi judge who was found dead at his house in Safdarjung, might have died by suicide due to ‘harassment’ by his wife, alleged one of his relatives. The 30-year-old judicial officer, Aman Kumar Sharma was found hanging inside the bathroom of his Green Park main residence on Saturday. He was posted at the Karkardooma Court.

According to reports, the building staff and police personnel had to enter the house through the utility shaft and then break open a window to gain access to the house. The door of the house was locked from inside. At around 1:30 pm on Saturday, Sharma was rushed to the Safdarjung Hospital, but doctors at the facility declared him brought dead.

What may have caused the judge to kill himself

The Delhi Police have so far not issued any statement on what might have led Sharma to take the extreme step. However, a relative quoted by Hindustan Times said that he had been facing problems in his married life. The relative suspected that the ongoing domestic dispute between the couple might have led the judge to die by suicide.

The relative claimed that the judge’s wife and his father were present inside the flat, when he killed himself. According to the relative, the judge’s father had come to the city from Rajasthan’s Alwar after receiving a call from him. This, according to the relative, was a distress call and the father had come to the city to solve the ongoing dispute between the couple (judge and his wife). The two had reportedly been facing problems for over 2 months now.

According to the relative, the judge’s sister-in-law who is a civil servant and is currently posted in Jammu and Kashmir had been “meddling” in their domestic dispute. The judge reportedly confided in his father, regarding the problems he was having with his wife. The judge told his father that he was being harassed by his wife for the past 2 months.

Argument between father and wife

The relative claimed that when the judge’s father tried to talk to his daughter-in-law, she threatened him with police action. She also asked him to leave the house immediately, claimed the relative. The father of the judge then tried to contact the woman’s parents, but they had reportedly blocked his number.

In the morning on Saturday, there was a massive argument in the house, between the 3 of them.

Meanwhile the police said that a relative of the judge called them up. They have investigated the crime scene and so far have not found any signs of foul play in the death of the judge. They however said that all angles are being explored.

The body was taken for post mortem and was handed over to the relatives after the procedure was completed. The relatives then took it to Alwar for the last rites, said a police personnel.

The judge had joined the Delhi Judicial Services in 2021. He had served as a judicial magistrate first class and then as a civil judge. He had handled several criminal and civil cases during his short career.
