E20 petrol
Amidst the ongoing discussions on social media and various forums regarding ethanol blended petrol (E20), the government held a press conference and answered many important questions. Officials said that much of the information being spread about E20 petrol is misleading and people should trust only official sources. The government says that the ethanol blending program is proving beneficial for farmers and the environment along with strengthening India’s energy security.
Why is the use of ethanol being increased?
According to the government, the biggest objective of mixing ethanol in petrol is to reduce the dependence on crude oil imports. This will save foreign exchange and help in meeting the energy needs of the country. Apart from this, with the increase in demand for ethanol made from sugarcane, maize and other agricultural products, the possibility of farmers getting better prices for their produce also increases.
What was said about mileage and engine?
At the press conference, officials admitted that the use of E20 petrol may result in a slight reduction in mileage in some vehicles, because the energy efficiency of ethanol is slightly lower than that of normal petrol. However, the government claims that this difference is not very much and depends on the vehicle model, engine technology and driving style. Officials also said that ethanol helps in better combustion, which reduces pollution and can have a positive impact on engine efficiency.
What advice for vehicle owners?
The government clarified that E20 petrol should be used only in vehicles which are E20-fuel compatible. Owners of old vehicles have been advised to follow the guidelines of their vehicle manufacturer. If the vehicle is not certified for E20, it is better to confirm the same with the company first.
Emphasis on energy security and green future
The government says that the ethanol blending program is not just a fuel policy but an important step towards self-reliant India and green energy. This will reduce expenditure on imported fuel, reduce carbon emissions and will also help in increasing the income of farmers. The government has appealed to the people to rely only on official sources for any information related to E20.
