finance minister
The Central Government is continuously taking steps towards making the income tax system more transparent and taxpayer-friendly. In this series, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has given clear instructions to the Income Tax Department officials that there should not be unnecessary burden on honest taxpayers. He said that strict action should be taken against tax evaders, but the tax system should be simple, convenient and reliable for people who follow the rules.
Emphasis on increasing trust between taxpayer and department
The Finance Minister told the officials that taxpayers should be treated in such a way that their confidence in the department increases. He stressed that the objective of tax administration should not only be tax collection but also to make compliance easy for the people. He said that stability and certainty in the tax system is very important for economic development.
Use of technology to stop tax evasion
Sitharaman said that along with providing relief to honest taxpayers, effective monitoring of tax evaders is also necessary. For this, the Income Tax Department should make more use of modern technology and data analytics. On one hand, this will curb tax evasion, while on the other hand, honest taxpayers will not have to face repeated investigations or unnecessary notices.
Emphasis on early settlement of pending tax disputes
The Finance Minister also directed the department to expeditiously dispose of pending tax appeals. He said that a large amount of revenue is still stuck in tax disputes. Timely resolution of such cases will not only help in raising revenue for the government, but will also provide relief to the taxpayers from being entangled in the legal process for a long time.
Government’s focus on ‘taxpayer friendly’ system
In the last few years, the government has made many reforms to simplify the income tax system. Efforts are being made to improve the experience of taxpayers through new income tax laws, digital processes, online services and faster refund systems. According to recently released data, more than 3.34 crore income tax returns have been filed for the assessment year 2026-27 and out of these, about 2 crore returns have also been processed expeditiously.
It is clear from the latest instructions of the Finance Minister that the government wants to develop a tax system where honest taxpayers get respect and facilities, while technology-based strict action should be taken against tax evaders. This is expected to increase the confidence of taxpayers as well as strengthen voluntary tax compliance.
