Good news for government employees, dearness allowance may increase by 3% from July

dearness allowance

These days, the eyes of lakhs of central government employees are fixed on the next big increase in their salary and dearness allowance (DA). The good news is that there is going to be a huge increase of about 3 percent in the DA of the employees from July. The latest Consumer Price Index (CPI-IW) data of industrial workers released by the Labor Bureau has confirmed this.

3 percent increase in allowance fixed from July

New figures of the Consumer Price Index released for industrial workers have come out. In the month of May this index has increased to the level of 150.8. Earlier, in the month of April this figure was recorded at 149.9. These increasing inflation figures have a direct impact on the allowances of employees. If we consider the inflation rate till the month of May as the basis, then it is almost certain that there will be an increase of at least 3 percent in DA from July. The government had earlier approved the proposal to increase DA by 2 percent. Only after that decision, the DA of the employees jumped from 58 percent to 60 percent. Now after this new surge this figure will go even higher.

Timeline of implementation of new pay commission

Government employees are eagerly waiting for the 8th Pay Commission. Administrative experts believe that the recommendations of this new pay scale can be implemented by the end of next year. However, whatever actual increase in salary will occur, it can be implemented only from January 2026. Whenever the new pay commission is fully implemented, employees will get huge arrears of 18 to 24 months in lump sum. At the same time, if we talk about the calculation of DA for July 2026, it is expected to be done under the Seventh Pay Commission only. It is a matter of relief that no arrears of DA will remain outstanding for the period from January to June this year.

How will DA arrears come into account?

According to a Moneycontrol news, any increase in DA under the 7th Pay Commission after July 2026 will be directly converted into arrears after the recommendations of the 8th Pay Commission are implemented. Understand it this way, if DA is increased on the basis of 7th Pay Commission in July 2026 and after some time the government implements the 8th Pay Commission, then the financial difference between the two will be paid to the employees. The government will pay the difference between the DA payment already given and the new DA to be made as per the revised pay scale as arrears.

Announcement will be made around Diwali

It is noteworthy that the Central Government revises dearness allowance for its employees twice a year. According to this rule, it is applicable from January 1 and July 1. Even though these announcements are often delayed by a few months, the increased amount always comes into the accounts of the employees from the last scheduled date. It is expected that this DA amendment of July 2026 will be formally announced in October this year, around Diwali. However, the complete picture will be clear only when the implementation date, fitment factor, pay matrix and DA transition formula are officially announced by the government.
