The eyes of central employees and pensioners are currently fixed on the 8th Pay Commission. Discussions are intense regarding possible changes in the salary structure. The National Council-Joint Consultative Machinery (NC-JCM), the main body of employee organizations, has put forward many important suggestions before the government.
These include proposals like simplifying the pay scale, increasing the minimum wage and changing the annual salary increase. However, these are only suggestions at present and the final decision on these will be taken only after the recommendations of the government and the Pay Commission.
Proposal to simplify pay scale
Employees’ organizations say that there are many levels in the existing pay matrix, where despite the difference in pay being relatively less, different levels have been created. For this reason, it has been suggested to create a more simple and balanced pay structure by combining some pay levels. If this occurs, the promotion process may become clearer for employees and pay disparities between positions with similar responsibilities are likely to be reduced.
Demand to increase minimum wage intensifies
The proposal also demands a significant increase in the minimum basic salary. Employee organizations argue that in view of rising inflation and cost of living, a change in the existing wage structure has become necessary. For this reason, it has been suggested to increase the minimum basic salary by amending the fitment factor. If such a proposal is accepted in future, lakhs of central employees and pensioners can benefit from it.
Demand to increase annual increment also
Along with the salary increase, employee organizations have also suggested a change in the rate of annual increment. He believes that in view of the current situation of inflation, regular and better increase in the income of employees is necessary. This can help maintain the purchasing power of salary over time.
Why do employees have hope?
Government employees have long been demanding a pay structure that is in line with inflation and reduces the gap between different pay levels. He believes that a simpler pay structure can make salary determination, promotions and future financial planning more transparent.
