Ghana Appoints Carlos Queiroz as New Men’s National Coach Ahead of World Cup

ACCRA, Ghana (AP) – The Ghana Football Association announced on Monday the appointment of Carlos Queiroz as the new head coach of the men’s national team, just weeks before the World Cup begins.

Queiroz will commence his duties immediately, leading the Black Stars as they prepare for their World Cup campaign, which kicks off against Panama on June 17 in Toronto.

Upcoming Matches and Preparation

Ghana’s World Cup journey will include matches against England near Boston and Croatia in Philadelphia. Additionally, the team has scheduled warm-up games against Mexico on May 22 and Wales on June 2.

Queiroz’s Experience and Vision

In a statement on the GFA website, Queiroz expressed his commitment to the role, stating, “This is not just another job – it is a mission. And I am ready to give everything of my experience and knowledge once again, in service of the game and the happiness of People.”

Queiroz was selected from over 600 applicants due to his extensive World Cup experience, having previously led South Africa in 2002, Portugal in 2010, and Iran in 2014 and 2018.

Recent Coaching Changes

Queiroz takes over from Otto Addo, who was dismissed on March 31 following four consecutive losses in warm-up matches. The Ghana Football Association aims to revitalize the team’s performance as they head into the prestigious tournament.
