Germany Ends Airport Transit Visa Requirement for Indian Travellers From June 3

Indian passport holders will no longer need an airport transit visa when changing flights through Germany on their way to another country.

The German Embassy in New Delhi announced that the airport transit visa requirement for Indian nationals has been lifted and takes effect from June 3, 2026. The change was published in Germany’s Federal Law Gazette on June 2.

What Changes for Indian Travellers?

Until now, many Indian travellers transiting through German airports on certain international routes needed an Airport Transit Visa (ATV), even if they never left the airport’s international transit zone.

From June 3, that requirement disappears. This means Indians flying through major German hubs such as:

  • Frankfurt Airport
  • Munich Airport
  • Berlin Brandenburg Airport

can transit onward to another country without obtaining a German airport transit visa, provided they meet all other entry and airline requirements.

The decision to end the transit visa requirement follows discussions between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz during Merz’s visit to India in January 2026.

Why This Matters

For Indian travellers, the change removes an extra visa application, additional paperwork, processing time, and fees.

It could also make flight itineraries via Germany more attractive from Indian cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, and Hyderabad, especially for passengers heading to North America, Europe, or other long-haul destinations.

Airlines and airports across Europe have been competing harder for transit traffic in recent years. Germany’s decision fits that broader trend of making connections easier for international passengers rather than adding more barriers.

Germany Cites Stronger India Ties

According to the embassy, the move follows discussions between India and Germany earlier this year. It reflects Berlin’s efforts to facilitate the movement of people while strengthening economic and bilateral ties.

For travellers, however, the practical takeaway is simple: one less visa to worry about when connecting through Germany.

India Welcomes Germany’s Transit Visa Waiver

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal welcomed Germany’s decision to remove the airport transit visa requirement for Indian nationals from June 3, 2026. He said the move follows India-Germany discussions and is expected to strengthen people-to-people ties while making travel easier.

What Travellers Should Remember

The exemption applies to airport transit only. Indian travellers must still obtain any visa required for:

  • Germany as a destination
  • The Schengen Area, where applicable
  • Their final destination country

Passengers should also continue to check airline-specific transit rules before booking.

Travelobiz Take

We see this as a practical win for Indian travellers. Removing Germany’s transit visa requirement cuts costs, reduces paperwork, and opens more flight options through some of Europe’s busiest hubs.
