One should remember the deceased person in his mind for 13 days and worship him with devotion for the salvation of his soul. During this period one should not consume alcohol, cigarettes and non-vegetarian food. The deceased person’s favorite food and dish should be prepared and offered as naivedya and worship should be done by lighting a lamp. Crying remembering them or calling for them to come back hurts that soul. This does not reduce their attachment to the earth, but instead of bringing peace to the soul, it may increase suffering.
