Garud Puran: About 47 days and 86 thousand Yojana long journey… Know the secret of the soul’s journey to Yamalok

Garuda Purana

Yamlok Path: Garuda Purana is considered very important in Sanatan Dharma. It has been given a place in 18 Mahapuranas. This Purana has its own importance. This holy book tells about a person’s birth, his death and the unseen world that begins after that. Every person sometimes thinks that after leaving the body, the soul goes to Yamalok, but how many days does it take for the soul to reach Yamalok? How long is the journey to Yamalok? Let us know about all these things in detail.

According to Garuda Purana, after death the soul does not directly reach the court of Yamraj. To reach Yamraj’s court i.e. Yamalok, the soul has to travel a very long and difficult journey. It takes approximately 47 days for the soul to complete the journey to Yamalok. According to old beliefs, as soon as a person dies, two messengers of Yamraj come to take his soul.

The soul remains among the family for 13 days

Yamdoot takes the soul of the deceased to Yamalok and keeps it there only for 24 hours. There the soul is shown a glimpse of the good and bad deeds done in its life. After showing the accounts of the deeds, the messengers bring the soul back to the same house where it died and leave it. After death, the soul remains among its home and family members for 13 days.

The road to Yamalok is 86 thousand yojanas long.

In Hindu religion, the rituals of Pind Daan and Shraddha are performed for 13 days so that the soul can start its journey to Yamalok with the power of food and water received from Pind Daan. After turning thirteen, the real and very scary journey of the soul begins. According to Garuda Purana, this path to Yamlok is about 86 thousand yojanas long. This route goes through very deserted and dangerous forests.

Styx river falls in the middle of the journey

While walking on this path to Yamalok, the soul neither gets any rest nor a single drop of water to drink. Yamdoots tie the soul with a rope and drag it forward. During this time the soul suffers from hunger and thirst. Then the Pind Daan done on earth becomes his only strength. On the journey to Yamalok, there is a terrible river Styx. Thick blood, pus, pus, bones and rotten flesh flow in it.

The sinful souls start trembling after seeing this river. On the contrary, virtuous souls cross this river easily. After a long journey of 47 days, enduring hunger, thirst and all the sorrows, the soul finally reaches the main court of Yamraj.
