What is the story of Ganga Dussehra?
According to Valmiki Ramayana, in ancient times there was a mighty king named Raja Sagar. He once performed Ashwamedha Yagya. Devraj Indra stole that sacrificial horse and tied it in Kapil Muni’s ashram. When 60 thousand sons of King Sagar reached Kapil Muni’s ashram in search of the horse, they thought that Kapil Muni himself had stolen the horse.

Sage Kapil became angry at his words and burnt him to ashes with the effect of his penance. Due to this, the souls of those princes could not get salvation. They could get salvation only by the touch of Devnadi Ganga. Then many generations later, King Bhagiratha performed rigorous penance for the peace of his ancestors’ souls and convinced Mother Ganga to come to earth.
The speed of river Ganga was so fast that the earth could not bear it. Then Lord Shiva held Mother Ganga in his locks and slowly made her flow on the earth. After this, Mother Ganga followed Bhagiratha and reached the place where the ashes of King Sagar’s sons were.
He attained salvation by the touch of Ganga water. The day when river Ganga came to earth, it was the tenth day of Shukla Paksha of Jyeshtha month. Since then the festival of Ganga Dussehra is being celebrated.
