According to the story, there was a king of Ikshvaku dynasty. His name was Bhagiratha. His ancestors (60 thousand sons of King Sagar) were cursed by Kokpil Muni, due to which he was not able to get salvation. The only way for their salvation was Ganga water. On this, Bhagiratha performed hard penance for thousands of years to bring Mother Ganga to earth. Lord Brahma was very pleased with the penance of Bhagiratha and asked him to ask for a boon. Then Bhagiratha asked Mother Ganga to send her to earth. After Brahma ji’s request, Mother Ganga agreed to come to earth.
Even after Mother Ganga agreed, there was a big problem and that was her speed. If Mother Ganga had come directly from heaven to earth with her speed, the earth would not have been able to bear her speed and would have gone into the abyss. According to the story of Shiva Purana, Mother Ganga was proud of her fast speed. He felt that even Mahadev would be swept away by his speed. When Bhagiratha saw this crisis, he sought refuge in Mahadev.
Mother Ganga remained in the locks of Lord Shiva for years.
It was very important to control the speed of Ganga. Lord Shiva knew this. After this, as soon as Mother Ganga fell down from heaven in arrogance, Mahadev opened his huge locks. Lord Shiva completely entangled Mother Ganga in his thick locks. Mother Ganga remained imprisoned in the locks of Lord Shiva. For years he could not find a way out of God’s locks. For many years she remained in Shiva’s hair.
According to Shiv Purana, this was the leela of Mahadev, so that the ego of Mother Ganga could be broken. Also the earth can be saved from cataclysm. On the prayer of Bhagiratha, Mahadev opened a lock of his locks and a thin stream of Ganga fell on the earth, which is known as Bhagirathi.
