Importance of bathing in Ganga: In Sanatan Dharma, Mother Ganga is considered to be the giver of salvation and the river that destroys sins. According to the calendar, this year on 25 May 2026 Ganga Dussehra The holy festival of will be celebrated. It is believed that on this day, taking a dip in the river Ganga washes away the sins of a person’s many births. This is the reason why on the occasion of Ganga Dussehra, there is a flood of devotees at the famous ghats across the country. But have you ever wondered whether all our bad deeds and sins are really erased by just taking a dip in water? After all, why do the sins of some people not leave them even after bathing in the Ganges? Let us know what is written about it in the Puranas and Srimad Bhagvad Geeta.
According to Padma Purana and Skanda Purana
Bathing in Ganga or pilgrimage is fruitful only when the person’s mind is pure. It is clearly written in these scriptures that if a person bathes in the Ganga with negative emotions like deceit, anger, greed or lust, then he cleanses only his body and not his soul. That means, along with external purification, internal purity is also equally important. If bad thoughts and actions remain in the mind, then the full benefits of bathing in Ganga are not achieved.
Why are there no consequences for deliberate sins?
According to the scriptures, it is possible to atone for the sins committed unknowingly. But the sins which are committed deliberately have to suffer their consequences. Bathing in Ganga does not eliminate them, rather the person has to go through the consequences of his deeds. All this is based on the law of Karma and Justice, where every action gets its result, if there is a good action then there is a good result and if you have done a bad action then you get the corresponding result.
What is written about this in Geeta?
In the fourth chapter of Srimad Bhagavad Gita, Lord Shri Krishna talks about the relationship between karma and knowledge. It is said in the Gita that Yathaidhansi samiddhognirbhasmasatkurutejrjun. The fire of knowledge: Sarvakarmani Bhasmasatkurute and ॥ That is, only the fire of knowledge has the ability to destroy all the deeds. This means that mere bathing in the Ganga does not give full results unless the person has true knowledge and true devotion towards God.
What is the real importance of bathing in Ganga?
The importance of bathing in Ganga is not limited only to washing away sins, rather it is a medium of self-purification, faith and introspection. It gives a person an opportunity to reconsider his life, actions and thoughts. When a person brings positive changes in his behaviour, thinking and lifestyle along with bathing, then only the real benefit of bathing in Ganga is achieved.
