The debate around E20 petrol has taken a new turn after a Ford EcoSport owner reportedly received a response from Ford India customer care warning about the potential impact of using E20 fuel in their vehicle. The development comes just days after the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas defending India’s ethanol blending programme, stating that E20 fuel is scientifically validated and continuously monitored by the government.
Ford Customer Care Response
The issue came to light after screenshots of a Ford India customer care response began circulating on social media. To verify the claim, RushLane independently contacted Ford India’s customer care regarding E20 fuel compatibility. The response received was identical to the one being shared online.
In its email response, Ford India stated: “Using fuel with a higher ethanol content (such as E20) may potentially cause damage to the engine or emission system. It could also lead to increased fuel consumption and may affect the validity of your vehicle’s warranty.” The company further advised owners to closely monitor vehicle performance and visit an authorised Ford service centre if any abnormalities are observed.

Comes After Government’s E20 Clarification
The customer care response has surfaced shortly after the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas released a detailed statement addressing what it described as misleading claims regarding ethanol-blended petrol. The ministry reiterated that India’s Ethanol Blending Programme is scientifically validated and that no widespread issues of engine failure or vehicle breakdown attributable to E20 fuel have been reported since its introduction.
The government also dismissed several viral claims circulating on social media, including allegations linking E20 fuel to insect attraction and concerns regarding vehicle insurance validity. According to the ministry, higher ethanol blends have been introduced only after extensive technical evaluations and consultations with automobile manufacturers and other stakeholders.
Important Context For Older Vehicles
While the government’s statement focuses on the overall safety and implementation of E20 fuel, many older vehicles sold before E20 compatibility standards were introduced were originally engineered for lower ethanol blends.
Several manufacturers have previously issued compatibility lists identifying which of their vehicles can safely operate on E20 fuel and which may require modifications or are recommended to continue using lower ethanol blends where available. Ford’s response may therefore be referring specifically to older EcoSport variants and vehicles not originally certified for E20 usage rather than making a broader statement about E20 fuel itself.
Questions Still Remain
The government’s recent clarification primarily addressed concerns related to vehicle safety, engine reliability and misinformation circulating online. However, it did not directly address issues frequently raised by vehicle owners such as fuel efficiency losses associated with higher ethanol blends, the impact on running costs, or whether consumers financially benefit from the transition to E20 fuel.
The latest Ford customer care response is likely to add further momentum to the ongoing discussion among vehicle owners, particularly those driving older vehicles that were not originally developed for higher ethanol blends. Until Ford issues an official clarification, it remains unclear whether the customer care email reflects the company’s official position regarding E20 fuel compatibility across its Indian vehicle lineup.
