Flying to Thailand? Immigration May Ask for Proof of Funds at Entry

Planning a trip to Thailand? Don’t assume your passport, visa-free entry, or Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) is all you need. Thai authorities have reminded foreign travellers that immigration officers can still ask for proof of sufficient funds before allowing entry.

The reminder, issued by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) earlier this month, comes as the country prepares to reduce its visa-free stay for many nationalities to 30 days. While the financial requirement is not new, travellers often overlook it until they reach the immigration counter.

Indian Travellers Should Keep Financial Proof Ready

For Indian passport holders flying from cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, or Kolkata, this means carrying documents that prove access to the required amount of money. Immigration officers may accept cash in Thai baht, an equivalent amount in another currency, or documents showing you can access those funds.

Entry approval remains at the discretion of the immigration officer. Even if you have a valid visa, e-Visa, visa exemption, or visa on arrival, you can still be refused entry if you fail to meet Thailand’s immigration requirements.

One trend has become clear across Asia. Immigration authorities are enforcing long-standing entry rules more consistently instead of introducing entirely new restrictions.

Minimum Funds Required to Enter Thailand

Depending on your entry category, you may be asked to show:

• Transit visa and certain visa exemption cases: THB 10,000 per person or THB 20,000 per family
• Visa on Arrival: THB 10,000 per person or THB 20,000 per family
• Tourist Visa: THB 20,000 per person or THB 40,000 per family
• Non-Immigrant Visa: THB 20,000 per person or THB 40,000 per family

Children under 12 are exempt from this requirement.

For travellers using Thailand’s visa exemption scheme, several Thai consular offices continue to mention a requirement of THB 20,000 per person or THB 40,000 per family.

Since guidance can vary by nationality and departure country, checking the latest rules before flying is advisable.

Other Entry Rules Still Apply

The proof-of-funds requirement is only one part of Thailand’s entry checks. Travellers should also be prepared to show:

• A valid passport or travel document
• A return or onward ticket, if requested
• Hotel booking or accommodation details
• Eligibility for the visa or visa exemption being used
• A completed Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) before arrival

Remember that the TDAC is a mandatory pre-arrival form and does not replace a visa or guarantee entry into Thailand.
