Explosions echoed again in Hormuz! CENTCOM claimed new attacks on Iran’s command centers, missile and drone sites. Has America-Iran now reached a dangerous turning point in confrontation?
US Iran Conflict: Tension seems to be increasing once again in West Asia. The US Army’s Central Command (CENTCOM) has claimed that it has launched precision strikes on several military targets in southern Iran. According to CENTCOM, the strikes targeted command centers, air defense positions, missile and drone infrastructure, coastal surveillance facilities and military bases on the strategic Greater Tunb Island in the Strait of Hormuz. The US side says the operation is aimed at weakening capabilities that could allegedly be used to pose a threat to commercial ships passing through the area. These claims have not been independently verified.
CENTCOM claims many military targets were targeted with precision weapons
According to CENTCOM, the latest military operation was completed on the night of 15 July. The US military says precision-guided munitions were used during the operation and several sensitive military installations in southern Iran were targeted. These are also said to include military structures located around Bandar Abbas, which is considered to be Iran’s main naval center. Separate actions were also taken against coastal defense systems and alleged cruise missile bases on Greater Tunb Island, according to the US statement.

Why did the Strait of Hormuz become the largest center?
The majority of global oil and gas supplies pass through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important sea routes. Any kind of military tension in this route could affect international energy markets and maritime trade. The US says the recent operations are aimed at ensuring safe navigation on this sea route and reducing potential threats to commercial vessels. At the same time, Iran has been criticizing American actions in the past and calling them steps to increase regional tension.

Why is Greater Tunb Island so important?
The Greater Tunb, Lesser Tunb and Abu Musa Islands have long been the subject of a sovereignty dispute between Iran and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Iran has controlled the islands since 1971, while the UAE considers them its territory and has sought a peaceful resolution to the dispute. According to experts, the geographical position of these islands is such that from here strategic monitoring of maritime activities in the Strait of Hormuz can be maintained. This is the reason why their military and geopolitical importance is considered very high.
Pressure on diplomatic efforts also increased
Recent military operations and regional tensions have further complicated the already complex diplomatic situation between the US and Iran. The lack of trust between the two countries and increasing military actions could make the path to a possible agreement more challenging. Analysts believe that if tension continues to increase like this, its impact will not only be limited to regional security, but may also affect global energy supply, international trade and maritime transportation.
Now the world’s eyes are on the next step
After CENTCOM’s claims, the whole world has focused its attention on the situation in West Asia. It will be important to see what official response Iran gives to this development and whether military activities intensify in the coming days or diplomatic efforts succeed in reducing tensions. At present, the Strait of Hormuz has once again become the most sensitive center of global geopolitical developments.
