Although the result ended Germany’s unbeaten run, earlier victories over Curacao and Côte d’Ivoire ensured they remained at the top of Group E and secured a place in the knockout rounds.
For Ecuador, the victory was a fitting way to conclude their World Cup campaign. Despite missing out on qualification, they showed their quality and determination by defeating one of the tournament favourites in their final match.
