Employees Provident Fund Organization
Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) members can continue to de-link incorrect Member ID (MID) from their Universal Account Number (UAN). Employees Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) has approved to extend this facility. In a circular issued on April 13, 2026, EPFO said it has expanded this facility to include cases where incorrect MIDs were created without the knowledge of the members and contribution in lieu of such MID is also available.
EPFO’s circular states that now users can do so manually to de-link the wrong MID. In this regard, the Competent Authority has approved extension of this facility to include cases where wrong MIDs were created without the knowledge of the members and contribution in such MIDs is also available.
However, EPFO clarified that requests for de-linking will not be allowed for member IDs from which claims are already processed/settled/pending, or for which contributions have been received more than six times. EPFO has also released a user manual to request for de-linking. It said that separate instructions regarding transfer of such de-linked balance to SRF will be issued later.
How to request?
As per the EPFO circular – EPFO will request for de-linking through the member portal. The request will be sent to the employer’s login to accept or reject. If the employer accepts the request, the MID will be de-linked at the employer level itself, provided the contribution is not received more than 2 times.
If the employer refuses to de-link MID
If the employer refuses, or does not take any action on the request for 2 weeks, or where contributions have been received more than 2 times but up to 6 times in respect of the said member, the request for de-linking will be forwarded to the regional office for further investigation. After proper investigation, it will be presented to the Section Supervisor, who will then present it to the RPFC with appropriate recommendations. RPFC (Compliance) will examine and approve or reject such D-Link request, recording reasons based on the merits of the request. ‘Separate instructions regarding transfer of such de-linked balance to SRF will be issued later.
How to de-link MID
- Login to EPFO member interface using your UAN and password. After successfully logging in, your member profile and menu options will appear on the home page.
- From the top navigation menu, go to: View > Service History. This section shows all the existing member IDs linked to your UAN.
- The Service Details page gives a complete list of institutions associated with your UAN, including Member ID, Institution Name, Date of Joining (DOJ), and Date of Leaving (DOE).
- Identify the member ID you want to remove and click on the De-link button in the Action column.
- The system automatically checks to make sure the member ID is eligible for deletion. Depending on the state of the system, you may encounter these restrictions, including join date restrictions and settled or pending claims.
- If the Member ID passes all validation checks (no initial DOJ and no active/settled claims), the system will process the request, and the Member ID will be removed from your UAN service history.
Is the money in the de-linked MID account?
UAN means Universal Account Number. It is a 12-digit number given by EPFO to all eligible salaried employees. EPFO has said that separate instructions will be issued on how the balance deposited in de-linked accounts will be transferred, including possible transfer to Suspense Reserve Funds (SRF).
