Elon Musk’s xAI launches Grok build to challenge Anthropic Claude in AI coding race

New Delhi: Elon Musk-led xAI has introduced its first artificial intelligence coding agent, Grok Build, marking the startup’s latest effort to compete in the rapidly growing AI software development market. As of now, the tool is in early testing, and it is only available for paid subscribers, as the company shared.

Grok Build is a tool to assist with complicated coding tasks that follow user directives. The launch marks xAI’s effort to establish itself as a contender to other AI startups like Anthropic, which has gained significant traction with its Claude models among developers for coding support and workflow automation. Bloomberg first reported the details of the rollout and the company’s drive to speed up coding.

xAI tries to close the gap in AI coding

Companies are competing to develop AI tools that can code, debug and manage software more efficiently, and the coding sector is one of the most competitive fields in the AI industry. Musk has publicly admitted that xAI is lagging behind in coding abilities.

In fact, Bloomberg reports that xAI CEO Michael Nicolls has been internally pushing staff to perform as well as Claude on various tasks over the next few months. For the company, that’s the first step in their efforts to get developers and enterprise users to join their Grok Build.

Major changes inside xAI

It also coincides with an ongoing restructuring effort at xAI. Musk is said to be readying the company for the future initial public offering of its parent company, SpaceX, which may be one of the largest IPOs ever.

In the process, xAI has endured layoffs, aggressive hiring, and substantial partnership deals. The company announced last month that it has joined forces with Cursor to enhance coding systems and computing resources. Cursor engineers have been working closely with xAI teams in the past few weeks, Bloomberg reports.

Meanwhile, the startup has also experienced some big exits. Devendra Chaplot, a founding member of Mistral AI who joined xAI earlier this year, recently left the company. Also gone are Beibin Li, who is leading xAI’s post-training team, and other individuals familiar with the situation.
